The BS in Biotechnology is well-suited for students who have earned Associate’s degree and are looking for a degree completion program to earn their BS degree. The program also targets career changers who are looking to get into the biotech field. The job opportunities over the next several years and decades are vast and diverse. There is a large market for talented students trained in both the sciences and soft-skills to be successful in today’s marketplace. Our students graduate and are ready to take on entry-level positions in the field within manufacturing, research and development, quality control and more. Excitingly, there is a pathway to the MS in Biotechnology program, where with one additional year, you can graduate with your MS! Back to top.
MS in Biotechnology
Northeastern’s MS in Biotechnology is an innovative, non-thesis graduate degree program. It combines advanced interdisciplinary training in biotechnology, biology, chemistry, and pharmaceutical sciences with the development of high-value business skills critical to success in today’s dynamic workplace. Graduates are prepared to innovate, collaborate, and lead as research, managerial, or technical professionals in a wide range of biotechnology specialties. The MS program is offered on ground in SV, Boston or online. This program is not currently available in San Francisco. Back to top.
MS in Bioinformatics
The MS in Bioinformatics program combines core coursework in bioinformatics computational methods, programming, and statistics with graduate electives that offer students the flexibility to specialize and build broader knowledge in both life sciences and computer science. Add one additional class to your degree and earn a Graduate Certificate in Data Science. The MS program is offered on ground in SV, Boston or online. This program is not currently available in San Francisco. Back to top.
Micro Credentials: Cell Therapies Workshop
The first workshop in the series offers exposure to the most current and innovative areas available in molecular biotechnology. The following topics will be covered – introduction to molecular biology and cell therapies, stem cell biology and therapies, RNA interference, CRISPR/Cas -9, CAR T-cell immunotherapies, various types of gene therapies, and more. Participants will learn the theory and practical application(s) behind these new technologies, how they are conducted, as well as their potential in facilitating scientific discovery and clinical utilization. Participants will have access to an experiential opportunity and will also have the option to take the course for audit or credit. Back to top.
Micro Credentials: Intro to Biopharmaceutical Technologies Workshop
The second workshop in the series offers exposure to the basic skills needed to develop a modern-day biopharmaceutical product. The following topics will be covered – DNA fingerprinting, PCR technology, microarrays, gene probes and targeting, expression of cloned gene products, gene cloning strategies, transgenic species, and mutation creation and analysis. Participants will learn the theory and practical application behind these technologies; how they are done, and their power in scientific discovery and treatment. In particular, this workshop will emphasize the latest advances in these classic technologies. Back to top.
Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology
The Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology is designed in response to a need in the biotechnology industry for individuals without a biotechnology background to obtain a strong foundation in basic biotechnology concepts and skills. Individuals, particularly those who are working in fields other than biotechnology, will acquire competency and learn new practical skills enabling them to increase productivity and allow for transitions into more biotechnology-related fields. The certificate is offered on ground in SV, Boston or online. The certificate is not currently available in San Francisco. Back to top.
Northeastern University enables you to create the educational experience that best meets your career and life goals. Recognized as a top 50-research university, we offer a dynamic learning environment, fueled, informed, and inspired by professionally-oriented, hands-on study.
Our graduates are able to work in fields as diverse as research and discovery, product development, biopharmaceutical regulations, bio-manufacturing development and operations. Students are able to keep their full-time jobs while receiving a degree. Go from your Bachelor’s degree to a Master’s (and even a PhD), while never having to compromise your current employment.
Experiential – Our programs prepare students for real-world positions with multiple and flexible experiential opportunities – from full and part-time co-ops, to remote tailored short-term projects with industry partners, our students have unparalleled access to our real-world experience within the leading edge of most industries.
Best of both worlds – Students have access to learning offerings and degrees developed in one of the country's top biotechnology hub (Boston/Cambridge) from leading practitioner scholars and delivered in the tech and innovation capital of the world (San Francisco/Silicon Valley).
Leading scholar practitioners – The programs are also designed and taught by leaders in industry and academic research – ensuring that our programming is at the cutting edge of the field.
Multiple Offerings within the field – Based on the needs of industry, Northeastern offers multiple programs and multiple entry points (from free events to full degree programs) not available at other regional institutions.
Flexible – You don’t have to leave your job while earning your degree. We offer flexible modalities and diversity of formats and locations – Students can take courses in downtown San Francisco, online or a combination. Frequent wrap-around biotechnology events and opportunities available for those interested. Curated events for students, hand-in-hand with industry partners: free live events to workshops to stand-alone mini-courses for credit to certificates or full degree programs students can choose the entry point and path that fits their needs.
Northeastern’s Network – Earn a Northeastern degree and join an alumni network who work at industry leading organizations that will help you build a strong professional network. We have over 245,000 alumni and over 3,000 corporate partners. Students have three dedicated student support teams to help navigate and make the most of their journey at Northeastern.
From acceptance to graduation and beyond, students work with these three teams to support their success:
1. Learner Services – Students can access a team of ‘generalist’ advisors trained to work with students via phone and email as needed.
2. Advising (and Career Coaching) Services – each student is paired with a specific academic advisor to provide academic guidance as well as a on-site career and academic coach to support in career planning and location-based planning.
3. Experiential Network (XN) Services – Students work with the XN team, including co-op advisors to provide guidance in helping students find the best opportunity for their academic and career goals. PlusOne – Start taking masters level courses while you finish your bachelors degree. A PlusOne degree program can accelerate receipt of a graduate degree and reduce its cost , since in most cases, a PlusOne degree student can earn a graduate degree with only one additional year of study beyond the bachelor’s.
